Imerovigli lies just north of the island’s capital, Fira. Known as the “balcony to the Aegean,” Imerovigli captivates visitors with its abundant sunshine and awe-inspiring sunsets. The village’s charm lies in its amphitheater-style construction around the caldera, connected by winding, cobblestone pathways. Imerovigli boasts numerous charming churches, all crafted in the iconic Cycladic architectural style. Notable among them are the Ai-Stratis Church, nestled in the heart of the village, and the Monastery of Saint Nikolaos, found along the path connecting Imerovigli to Fira. Adding to its historical significance, Imerovigli is home to Skaros, the remnants of a Venetian Castle erected in 1207 by Jacopo Barozzi, who ruled over the Cyclades islands at the time.
Skaros stands as one of the five fortified settlements, with a unique historical prominence. In its heyday, it was simply referred to as ‘Kastro’ (Greek for castle). The rock was inhabited during medieval times, offering refuge from pirates.
Skaros served as the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, although the evacuation of Skaros commenced in the early 17th century. Over the years, the promontory at Skaros has weathered the effects of powerful earthquakes, most notably the one in 1650.
